CITB has revealed that almost 14,000 businesses have been supported in the form of grants of £77m in the last year. Around 45% of grant spent went to small and micro businesses.
The CITB Grants Scheme provides grants for construction employers training their workforces. Businesses can apply for grant for apprenticeships, short courses, and short/long qualifications.
Paid for through the construction levy on industry businesses, CITB training grants support employers to maintain standards and ensure the right skills are available. CITB also offers employer funds, which last year amounted to over £19m to assist with standards development, training delivery and apprenticeships. Collected as a percentage levied on PAYE at a rate of 0.35% and 1.25% for Net CIS, the proposed rates for the 2022 Levy Assessment are expected to be confirmed in May 2022.
CITB Grants for Apprenticeships
CITB says that apprenticeships are the highest used area of grant amongst businesses, claiming 64% of grant spend in 2021/22. An additional £14m has been made available for 2022/23 to support a forecast increase in apprenticeship take up. This comes as an additional 217,000 workers are forecast to be required by 2025 to meet demand.
CITB’s recent Rethinking Recruitment report highlights some of the challenges industry currently face when recruiting new entrants, and this places greater emphasis on apprenticeships as a key way of securing a pipeline of future talent.
Tim Balcon, CITB Chief Executive, said: “We’re incredibly proud of the support the Grant Scheme has been able to provide in the last year, helping many smaller businesses through a turbulent time. The Grant Scheme is in place for all eligible employers who are registered with CITB, making it a huge opportunity that could really make all the difference for a business wanting to expand or further develop their skills.”
To help address skills shortages in the industry, CITB has introduced new and increased grant rates from 1 April 2022. Find out more on the CITB Grants and Funding page.
CITB’s direct employer funding for 2021/22 came to a total of £97m, which includes grant support. Other employer support including standards and qualifications; and employer support services, came to a total of £8.8m. £69.3m was spent on providing products and services, including apprentices and direct training.
