A MAN working as a contractor at a Morrisons warehouse in Wakefield died when a roof collapsed, the police has reported.

West Yorkshire Police said they were called to a Morrisons supermarket distribution warehouse at Wakefield 41 Business Park in Kenmore Road, Wakefield at 10.20 AM on Monday 2 August 2022.

The contractor was part of a team which had been called in to inspect the warehouse roof, which collapsed falling on top of him and crushing him to death. It is not clear what was wrong with the roof or what issues were being examined by the contractor team.

Paramedics were called to the scene and desperately tried to save the worker but he was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.

The site remains cordoned off and police are treating the incident as an “industrial accident”.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has now been called in to continue investigations following the fatal incident and the coroner’s office has been informed.

A spokesperson for Morrisons said: “This is a terrible and shocking tragedy and our thoughts are with his family. Police and other investigating authorities are on site.”

A HSE spokesperson said the organisation will be “available to support if called upon to do so”.
