AFTER recently saying goodbye to six more Slate & Tile Apprentices who successfully achieved their Level 2 Apprenticeship course with the Eastern Region Roof Training Group (ERRTG) after two years, the organisation has welcomed eight new apprentices that will be starting their journey into the roofing industry.
The programme, which involves the student attending college one day a week and working for their contractor the other four days, has proved to be extremely successful since it was started in 2009 and is very popular among ERRTG roofing members. This year’s intake includes apprentices from Bailey Roofing, Cando Roofing, Aspect Roofing, Top2Bottom Roofing & RG Leverett Roofing.
During the apprenticeship, each trainee will study nine modules, including installing single lap tiles, slates, and plain tiles. The course is split between theory sessions and practical sessions leading to the knowledge and the skills needed to be a competent roofer. Upon completion of their course, each apprentice will gain a Level 2 Diploma in Slate & Tile and a Level 2 NVQ in Slate & Tile.
Eastern Region Roof Training Group is continuing to run its popular taster days in roofing for local high school students.
The scheme, which has now provided over 50 students with the opportunity to have a go at roofing, is part-funded by CITB. The Taster Days allow ERRTG to promote careers in roofing for students that are at the point in their education where they are considering future careers.
Each student has the chance to work on roofing rigs, including felt and batten work, and tiling and slating. The students also take part in a short theory session, similar to those on the apprenticeship courses ERRTG delivers.
The Taster Days have proved successful at encouraging students that had not previously considered a career in roofing to consider starting an apprenticeship in roofing once they leave school.
