The UK’s only specialist Further Education construction college, Leeds College of Building, will have a new CEO & Principal, Derek Whitehead who is currently Deputy Principal.
Following the retirement of the incumbent, Ian Billyard, Derek will take up the position in January 2019. Derek said: “I have worked at the College for 14½ years; the College has an exciting future ahead, supported by stakeholders and employers and I am honoured and thrilled to have the opportunity to lead it.”
Derek started his career at 16 in the construction industry as an apprentice carpenter and joiner, progressing to site management before leaving the industry to teach. He worked as a lecturer at Keighley College and Bolton College before joining Leeds College of Building in January 2004 where he has managed curriculum and quality.
Derek’s appointment follows that of Ian Billyard’s who was also promoted from deputy to principal in March 2003 .
Ian said: “It has been an enormous privilege to have worked with such an outstanding team of staff and Governors. During this time the College has changed considerably; both in response to industry and the FE sector and I feel it’s in great shape for the next stage in its development.”
Leeds College of Building has 6,500 students and 65 roofing students currently.
