ROOF TRAINING COURSES delivered through the Specialist Applied-Skills Programme (SAP) are available in several locations across the England and Wales and are a valuable addition to the roofing qualifications available.
SAPs are available in disciplines where no formal apprenticeship programme exists. They offer an alternative route to qualification through quality training, as the providers have been checked for quality, systems and training before contracts are awarded. SAPs are ideal for individuals who have some experience of roofing on site.
Wales National Roof Training Group trainer, Dan O Sullivan comments, “I have been a roofer since 1995 and learnt roofing ’on the job’, qualifying as a roofer in 2003. The opportunity arose to become a trainer using funding via the RIA for the EATS course, and then began working for WNRTG delivering the roof slater and tiling training since March 2019. Its been a huge learning curve to learn the skill of delivering training as it’s completely different to running a roofing business. But the rewards are great to see the young trainees coming into the centre and assisting them to learn skills or hone their current skills. The SAP programme works really well for roofing companies as its just 26 days off job training but they use these skills then on a day to day in their roofing roles.”

Group Tegula’s employee Nathan Towers said, “I’m over the moon to have won the student of the year award. I feel that I’ve came a long way in such a short period of time having only been in the industry for two years. Over the 18 months that I was on SAP training I picked up a lot of knowledge from each of the trainers that came into see me and it gave me a wider understanding of roofing, and grew my confidence hugely. Overall, the course was hugely beneficial to me and I believe it will be to others on the same path as me.”
Various SAPs
The South West Roof Training Group have previously run SAPs for both Roof Sheeting and Cladding, and for Roof Slating and Tiling, but CITB funding was not available this year. SWRTG continue to deliver quality training including the SAP with funding for companies that can access the CITB Skills and Training Fund.
CITB also supports SAPs through their Travel to Train initiative which supports travel and accommodation.
