Roofing Contractor Wins on Training at Nottingham Business Awards

J Wright Roofing Ltd has won the 2019 Apprentice Employer of the Year award at the Nottingham Post Business Awards beating off some considerable competition from larger, PLC companies in the process.

The Nottingham-based business has long been known for its committed company policy of championing skills in the roofing industry and training the next generation of professional roofers.

Led by Jason Wright, the firm has instigated an ‘early intervention programme’, run in partnership with Nottinghamshire school, The Bulwell Academy.

The programme features J Wright Roofing visiting the school regularly to give presentations and offer taster days to Year 9 school pupils. This is followed through with work experience at Years 10 and 11, creating a pipeline of recruits into the firm’s Apprenticeship Programme.

J Wright Roofing has taken on four apprentices every year for the past 11 years.

Striking success
The success of the programme is striking – with a 96% success rate of apprentices qualifying to a minimum NVQ2 in Roof Slating & Tiling at Leeds College of Building, as well as a further three youngsters completing a flat roofing BUR Apprenticeship at Kings Norton CITB College.

Jason Wright is a key figure in the roofing industry in his own right. As well as being a Fellow of the Institute of Roofing, Jason is the Chairman of the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) Midland Region. He’s also a Liveryman and master craftsman member of the Worshipful Company of Tyler’s & Bricklayers and a Heritage Master Craftsman on the NFRC Heritage Roofing list.

Jason comments, “Here at J Wright Roofing we have a determined commitment to train up the next generation and help plug the roofing skills gap in the industry. In fact, at any one time we have 12 apprentices in our training programme, which includes the recently qualified improvers.

“Construction is an industry with an ageing workforce, with over 70% of workers over the age of 35.

In our company, with a workforce of just over 60 people, 70% of our workforce is under the age of 35!”

As if any further proof was needed of the success of J Wright Roofing’s training strategy, the company reports a 100% pass rate in the recent RoofCert tests the company’s workforce sat this month. All 20 of the firm’s roofing operatives passed the RoofCert slating and tiling test, with another batch due at the end of July to sit the new flat roofing RoofCert exam.
