SkillBuild 2019 is set to return to Birmingham’s NEC yet again for the UK’s largest multi-trade competition for construction trainees and apprentices.
Forming part of WorldSkills, SkillBuild is the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for construction trainees and apprentices, allowing them to compete in their chosen field, from roof slating to carpentry, stonemasonry to plastering.
Heats for the Roof Slating and Tiling competitors will take place at six hubs across the UK. Finalists will be chosen from the winners of each heat.
Competitors will be required to undertake a specific project and demonstrate time management, commitment and technical ability. They will need to show accurate interpretation of drawings as well as cutting, pointing and application techniques – using the appropriate PPE to safely create a secure structure, free from defects.
Simon Dixon, NFRC Training Manager said: “I am really looking forward to this year’s SkillBuild Heats and National Final as there has been a shake up with how we run the Heats. We are very pleased to be holding a Heat at Eastern Region Roof Training Group after such a long time, but also to be holding Heats at City of Glasgow College and Stoke on Trent College, which don’t deliver roofing courses. Holding Heats at these new venues will showcase roofing to a wider audience and in fact there will an NFRC Roadshow event to promote careers in roofing alongside some of the Heats.
“The NFRC Judges this year are Bob Coutts, Matt Timby and Andy Rowlands – all renowned experts in the discipline of slating and tiling, so as always, we can guarantee that the top eight young roofers in the country will make it through to the National Finals in November.
“We are grateful for the support that we receive from industry and the year’s Heats are sponsored by Marley Eternit who will be supplying Plain Tiles and JB Red Batten. Proctor Roofshield will be supplying the underlay with Burton Roofing Supplies providing all other necessities.”
