The Great British Slate Off Gets Underway

While they are scrutinised completing the slating task according to a defined specification, the college tutors in attendance will be recreating a slate poppy originally designed by judge, Matt Timby to mark Remembrance Day on 11 November.

Joining Matt Timby as judge is a second roofing expert, Bob Coutts. Bob and Matt have years of experience having previously judged and taken part in the international IFD World Championship for Young Roofers, and the Skillbuild roofing competition.

Great British Slate Off Prizes

The winner of the Great British Slate Off will be awarded the Mason-Elliott Award by the Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers and be invited to their annual Craft Awards Luncheon in London next year.

Industry Support

The competition was launched this year by the NFRC due to roof slating and tiling not being included in this year’s SkillBuild. The industry still wanted to give young people a chance to compete and so organised the Great British Slate Off competition as an alternative.

Student slaters taking part in the competition are:

    • Todd Oatey – Bolton College
    • Connor Wilson – Fife College
    • Bailey Howe – South Devon College
    • Jordan Maley – South Lanarkshire College
    • Josh Faulkner – Eastern Region Roof Training Group
    • Kyran Sharlotte – Leeds College of Building, Roofing Division
