Top Five Cities for Trade and Construction Jobs

As London becomes ever more expensive to live in, many construction and trade professionals are looking elsewhere to find employment and settle down. Research carried out by data scientists at Adzuna, has looked into which cities have the most construction and trade job vacancies outside of the capital.

Manchester tops the vacancy leaderboard
The job market analysis, carried out in August 2018, saw Manchester land the top spot as the city with the most trade and construction jobs outside of London. With 2,401 vacancies up for grabs, Manchester had more than double the number of jobs on offer than Reading, the city with the fifth highest number of vacancies.

If you want a wealth of opportunities to choose from and a juicy paycheck at the end of the month, then Birmingham is the city that pays, with 1,625 construction roles open, boasting an average salary of £38,842.

City Jobs Available Average Salary % of Jobs out of Top 5 Cities
Manchester 2,401 £36,930 31.60%
Bristol 1,685 £38,130 20.30%
Birmingham 1,625 £38,842 19.20%
Leeds 1,312 £34,437 18.80%
Reading 910 £36,442 10.10%

Job growth
Jobseekers either unwilling or unable to relocate don’t need to stray too far however. The construction sector saw a 77% year-on-year increase in August, as job vacancy numbers leapt from just under 53,000, to over 93,500.

This suggests that, despite worries of slowing growth in the industry, employers are still optimistic and demanding higher numbers of workers for future projects. In fact, construction is the second fastest growing sector for vacancies in the UK, beaten only by manufacturing.

Salary growth doesn’t appear as promising – down 2% year-on-year. But, at £36,159 average salaries in trade and construction are still above the UK average of £33,155.
